DEATH OF MR. WILLIAM BEST, OF TANGMANGAROO The sad news reached Yass on Friday morning last, that Mr. William Best, of Taunton, Tangmangaroo, one of the oldest and most respected residents of this district, had passed away that morning at 6 a.n., at the age of 63 years. The sad news, although expectwed, came as a great shock to the residents of Yass, where the deceased, for upwards of half a century, had been so well and favourably known. Mr. Best had resided at Tangmangaroo, almost all his life, where he carried on grazing, farming, and fruit growing, being the owner of one of the largest and best cultivated orchardst in the southern districts. He made fruit growing a stuidy, with the result that his fruit has been much sought after in the Sydney market. The deceased also combined sheep farming and agriculture with fruit growing, and having some speldid land gew excellent crops of what. About ten years ago he built a very handsome residence (Taunton), which stands on an elevated position with a commanding view of the whole of the estate besides the surrounding country. Mr. Best's life is an example to many. He was a steady and industrious man, and has left behind him, as a legacy to his widow and children, a property which will ever be a monument to his prudence and forethought. Mr Best was a man whose name was known all over this state and Victoria as a straightgoing and honest sportsman, being a first-class pigeon shot; he had been competing in champion and other pigeon matches for over forty years, and has carried off prizes and trophies by the dozen, besides winning the championship of this colony, which was shot off in Sydney. It is a coincidence that the day he died a 100 pound pigeon match was being shot of in Yass, and which the deceased intended competing in -- at about 12 o'clock while the match was in progress, Mr. E.H. barber, who had been in many a match with Mr Best, announced to the large number present that their old friend, who had been so often with them, and whose genial smile they had missed that day, had gone to his long home. There was profound silence for a few minutes while all present stood with heads uncovered as a mark of respect to the memory of their old and much-respected friend. The deceassed had always enjoyed excellent health until about 3 weeks ago when he consulted Dr Thane with reference to a pain at his heart. On last Monday week he took a bad turn and the doctor was again called in. He rallied until early on Wednesday morning when he seemed to collapse and a special messenger was sent for the doctor, and the members of his family were summoned to the bedside. The doctor remained almost all day endeavouring to relieve the sufferer, but without avail, and he passed peacefully away surrounded by the members of his family, including his four brothers, Samuel and John of Tangmangaroo and Robert and Geo., of Sydney. Mr Best leaves a wife and family of four sons and four daughters, two daughters being married and one son. The funeral took place on Saturday last and was very largely attended by residents from Sydney, Yass, Borrowa, Binalong, Rye Park and other parts of the district. The remains were encased in a very handsome cedar coffin were interred in the Tangmangaroo cemetery, the Rev. Goodchild reading the prayers for the dead, after which a number of wreaths were placed on the grave, and the earth being filled in there passed away for ever the well known friend of all and enemy of none. Mr G. Bates of Messrs. Thomson and Bates, conducted the funeral arrangements.
