He arrived in Australia 1792 aboard the ship Pitt as Sergeant in the NSW Corps. His wife Ann sailed with him. Also on the ship was Captain Joseph Foveaux, a bachelor and one of the most senior NSW Corps officers. Sometime after landing (probably about 1794) Ann Sherwin left her husband for Foveaux, returing with him to England in 1810. Their marriage there in 1815 appears to have been technically bigamous.

BEFORE THE MAGISTRATES.
Yesterday Mr. William Sherwin, committed from Parramatta, was examined on a charge of insolence and disrespectful conduct towards the Commanding Officer of the above settlement; and in consequence of indecorous and contemptuous behaviour to the Bench, was ordered to be imprisoned 14 days; and at the expiration thereof to undergo re-examination in the original charge."

"William Sherwin was yesterday brought before a Bench of magistrates, the term of his committal for contempt having expired; and the Evidence in his behalf being heard patiently throughout, together with all such remarks as he had to offer in his defence, the Bench, was clearly of opinion, that the sentence of the Bench of Magistrates held at Parramatta was extremely lenient, requiring only a public Apology for his highly --- and disrespectful treatment of the Commanding Officer at that Settlement, and repeated to the Magistrates; and that it was therefore inadmissible to deviate from that decision. Being now again called upon to --- thereto he positively required compliance. Whereupon it was ordered, that on the charge upon which he originally was committed he should be imprisoned in the County gaol for the term of six calendar months; and at the expiration of the term give security for his good behaviour for one year, --- in 50l. and two --- in 25l. each, or remain in custody until --- security shall be given."
