William and his wife Sarah arrived in the colony on 13 Mar 1823 aboard the ship 'Royal Princess'. He had enlisted as a private on 3 Dec 1810 and was a soldier of the 6th Enniskillen Dragoons and the 18th Hussars till 10 Sep 1821 when he was discharged in England. He re-enlisted on 12 Jun 1822 at Margate. William fought in the Peninsular War as part of the Duke of Wellington's army, as well as fighting at battles in Victoria, Pampeluna and Orthes in Spain, Pyrenees and Toulouse in France. William also fought in the Battle of Waterloo;for which he was awarded the Waterloo Medal, which is with the War Memorial Museum in Canberra. The medal is inscribed "Corporal William Keevers 18 Hussars Wellington Waterloo June 18, 1815".
