Cornelius or James Cowen was convicted of larceny on 19 January 1818, at Sessions held at Kings Lynn Norfolk UK. He was a seaman or a labourer aged 20 and had stolen a watch the property of William Watson, plus two linen shirts, one linen waistcoat, one pair of stockings, 1 cotton handkerchief, and a red leather pocket book, the property of John Hurst. The total value of the stolen goods was seven shillings and ten pence.
Cornelius was found guilty and sentenced to transportation for seven years. He arrived in Australia on the ship 'Shipley 2' on 18/11/1818, the ship having left England in July 1818 with 150 male convicts on board. He was described as being 5 ft 2 inches tall, brown hair, dark eyes, dark/pale completion. Cornelius was granted a Certificate of Freedom on 9/3/1826 [no. 48/5020], his age being given as 27. It was noted on this form that a ticket-of-leave [no 207/1141] had previously been issued but no date was recorded.
