He was a wiry man who was a hard worker and his mates had trouble keeping up with him. <p> Times were very hard during the depression years and often there was no work at all. <p> Stanley and Mary were very artistic in their own way and photos exist of all the lovely toys and things they made for their children during those hard years. <p> Stanley used packing cases to make wooden toys of all descriptions and Mary used old clothing to make cloth animals and dolls. He used to draw lovely horses.<p> Through sad curcumstances they separated in the late 1930's and Stan later went north to work. He would return periodically to Sydney and stay at the People's Palace in the the city. He developed Parkinson's Disease and on one visit back from "the bush" he would have had his savings on him from his work and apparently he was robbed and knocked down the stairs and died in 1952. Stanley William PURNELL married Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON in 1915.
