OBITUARY. The death of Mr. James James, of Kellyville, in his 85th year was briefly referred to in our last issue. Ripe in years, and honored by all who knew him, the grand old man passed peacefully away on Thursday morning of last week. Born at Castle Hill in 1828, the late Mr. James lived in that district all his life, and resided only four miles from his native village when he died. In 1841 he married Miss Amelia Fishburn who survives him, and had he lived till July next the good old couple would have lived together 65 years in connubial bliss. Born, christened, and married in the one spot, living there all those years, practi- caly dying and being buried there is a wonderful record when one contemplates it. To them were born twelve children — 9 sons and 3 daughters, and the survivors of the family are grouped round, and within a few miles of, the old home. Three sons and two daughters are dead, the respective ages of the sons being 57, 31 and 28 at the time of their deaths. One daughter died at 59 years of age, and one in infancy. The members of the family still living are Mrs. F. R. Black (Glenorie) Mr. William James (orchardist, Castle Hill), Mr. (ieorge James (ex- Civil Servant) Mr. Albert James (orchardist, Guilford), and Mr. Fredrick James (orchardist, Merrylands). Physically the deceased was a very big and robust man. His normal weight for very many years was 19 stone, and he weighed 16 stone five months before he died. He never knew what sickness was till within the past three or four years, when his health began to decline, and he passed away from senile decay. For a courjle of davs prior to death he was unable to articulate, but was perfectly conscious and clear in his mind, and recognised everybody who came near him, The father of the deceased gentleman, Mr. Samuel James, came to New South Wales in the 17th century, and was made Chief Constable of Sydney, and overseer of convicts at Castle Hill. The sub- ject of this notice went on the land, and for many years was one of the most prosperous orchardists in the country, having a fine estate at Castle Hill. In fact, he was a pioneer of the industry, and one of the most respected men of the Hills district. The James family was a noted one around Castle Hill, and all the boys were expert cricketers. The father . and sons frequently played and defeated good cricket clubs, and were always ready to take on all comers at the game. The deceased will be very much missed in the locality where he was such a familiar figure for so many years. He would never do anyone a bad turn, and his big generous heart always had a soft spot for those in adversity. His sympathy was bestowed in an unostentatious, but practical way, and many a heart was gladdened by his benevolence. He was a man among men — one of the good old type we are fast losing, and who are unhappily not being replaced. The funeral took place on Friday of last week, the cortege moving from Belleville to Rouse Hill, where, in the Church of England cemetery, the last sad rites were performed by the Rev. E. G. Cranswick. The coffin was borne from the hearse to the church, thence to the grave, by the deceased's six stalwart sons, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. W. Metcalfe, of Parramatta. The funeral was an exceptionally large one, over 300 persons being present, which was a silent but eloquent tribute to the affectionate regard in which the deceased and his splendid family are held.
