Text:

In 1891 he began to have financial problems, a number of his vessels were lost - he also carried mortgages for other people and he became a victim of the depression in the early 1890s which was marked by a series of bank crashes. On a return trip from Sydney with his wife he suffered a seizure and fell from his horse near Terrigal and died. A magisterial inquiry held the next day found the cause of death was heart disease. (BDM No 6260). At the time of his death he owned the ketches Sir George, Candidate and Sea Nymph, the brigantine Sir Henry and the cutter Tuggerah. He also had a half share in the Schooner Mabel White. (While owned by him Thomas's ships were always painted blue) The Davis home on Barnhill was destroyed by fire on October 6, 1910 at the time it was about to be opened as a boarding house by his daughter Leah
