Mr and Mrs E.J. Haworth of Wallsend celebrated their diamond wedding on February 1. They were married in Ballarat in 1871, by the Rev. Chas. Collins. Mrs. Haworth's maiden name was Caroline Champion. Soon after their marriage they went to Newcastle, and resided first at Waratah and later at Wallsend. They were residents of the Newcastle district for approximately half a century. Mr Haworth was born in 1844 in Pitt-street, Sydney, on the site later occupied by the Civil Service Stores. He has been associated with the Latter Day Saints' Church for many years, and for the past seven years has been president of the Australasian Mission of that denomination.

Among the many old residents of Wallsend to die during the past few weeks was Mr. Edward James Haworth, one of the few nonogenarians of the town. In his 91st year, Mr. Haworth died at his residence in Irving-street Wallsend. Mrs. Haworth, who is in her 88th year, with two sons and three daughters, survive. Elder Walter J. Haworth of Sydney, one of the leaders of the Reorganised Church of Jesus Christ if Latter Day Saints, and Mr. Alfred Haworth, of Weston, are the sons. The daughters are Mesdames H.J. Ferrett (Campsie), W. Henricks (Balmain) and A.F. Mackay (Wallsend). The second son in the family, Frederick, died 21 years ago. Colonel McKenzie was a cousin to Mr. Haworth. Mr. Haworth was born in Pitt-street, Sydney and was married at Ballarat, Victoria. About 60 years of his life had been passed in Wallsend. Twenty years ago, Mr Haworth and the members of his family at home had the misfortune to lose all their possessions, when their home at what is now South Wallsend, was demolished by fire. For many years Mr. Haworth was employed in the Wallsend colliery. He had also worked in other mines of the district. He was a member of the Reorganised Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in which he occupied the office of elder. He was a foundation member of the Wallsend branch of the church. The Wallsend Church of the Reorganised Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was filled for a funeral service, which was conducted by apostle G.G. Lewis. In the service at the graveside, in the Wallsend cemetery, Apostle Lewis was assisted by Elder A.V. Robinson. Six grandsons, Messrs. Eric, Walter, James and Albert Haworth, and Edward __ and John Ferret were pall-bearers. |
