James enlisted on 15 August 1915 into the 12 Reinforcements, 13th Battalion. His service number was 3938. He was described as aged 24, height 5 feet five and three quarter inches high, weight 140 pounds, chest 36 inches, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes, religion Church of England.
On 4 March 1816 he was taken on strength to Tel-el-Kebir in Egypt which was a training centre for Australian reinforcements and a large POW camp.
On 1 Aug 1916 he disembarked at Alexandria, Egypt and landed on 8th August 1916 at Marseilles, France.
On the 2nd and 3rd February 1917 he was in France, hospitalised with boils. He rejoined his unit in France on 16 February 1917. He also contracted venereal disease.
On 14 April 1917 he was wounded in action with a gun shot wound to the wrist of his left hand. He was transported to England on 19 April 1917. He was admitted on 20 April 1917 to the First Southern General Hospital in Birmingham. He was discharged from hospital on 13 Aug 1917.
He returned to Australia per H.M.A.T. Balmoral Castle, embarking on 1 Feb 1819 and disembarking on 28 Mar 1918 and was discharged from the imperial force as a consequence of medical unfitness (his gunshot wound) on 2 May 1918.
