CROOKWELL (From our Correspondent.) I REGRET to announce the sudden death of Mr. Benjamin Stephenson, who died on Fri day, the 6th instant, at the age of fifty nine years. On the day preceeding his death the deceased gentleman was in his usual state of good health, and was engaged about the duties of his farm, which is situated about two and a half miles from the town on the Binda road. He retired to bed about 8 p.m., and upon one of his sons going to call him upon the following morning, he found him in bed unconscious and breathing heavily. Mr. Prosser, chemist, Crookwell, was sent for, and subsequently Dr. Gentle, of Goulburn was telegraphed for, but the sufferer died before the doctor arrived. Under any circumstances the death of "Ben" as he was familiarly called, would have been a matter of more than ordinary regret; but the sudden manner in which he passed away from our midst inten sified the feelings that the death of even such a general favourite would have called forth. Mr. Stephenson was born near Penrith in the year 1824, and first came to this district about forty-four years ago; but a short time atter wards he went on the Lower Lachlan, and there formed the "Mulla Mulla" station. His daring and adventurous spirit well qualified him for the position of a pioneer and pre cursor of civilization, and, leading the way to regions of fertility and beauty, where as yet the feet of white men had seldom or never been. For some years he was engaged in a lucrative ttaffic in stock between this and the neighbouring colony, and no doubt the hard ships he then endured told upon a constitu- tion naturally hardy. An inquest was held before W. S. Gunn Esq., J.P., district coroner, and a jury, when the evidence of Dr. Gentle showed that death was the result of apoplexy caused by the rupture of a blood vessel on the brain. The funeral took place on Sunday, when despite the pouring rain a large con course of'people assembled, and followed to the grave the remains of a general friend and a brave, upright man.
