Sources differ on the whereabouts of John's birth. Some sources record his immigration on the ship Friends, and others state that he was born in the colony. All that can be known for certain is that he was either born on the voyage of the Friends of shortly after it arrived in NSW (although there doesn't appear to be any baptismal record in NSW records). I think the weight of evidence tips in favour of his having been born on the voyage.

Text:

TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. - SIR, - Having seen in today's Herald in the police reports, my name, derogative to my character, I would wish, through your widely-spread, columns, to state how I am and have been situated since my wife's death, which occurred on the 3nd of October 1858, leaving me with eight children. The oldest not being gifted with her proper faculties, I could not depend upon her for assistance. My second daughter, a girl arrived at womanhood, has been for months without coming to see if either myself or her younger brothers and sisters require anything done. I have to depend on one of my younger children for every comfort I have enjoyed since my wife's death. My daughter Margaret having been kept and encouraged by her aunt, Jane Boyd, to my disadvantage, and annoyance, she has come home to my house today, on the very day which Mrs Boyd thought fit to injure me in the eyes of the public of Balmain. Sir, by inserting this letter you will oblige your obedient servant, JOHN EDDINGTON Cooper-street Balmain
