Buried St Thomas cemetery, West Street, North Sydney. An Act of Parliament in 1967 designated the area as 'community land' and the Cemetery was handed over to North Sydney Council. The conversion of the Cemetery to Rest Park in the early 1970s was the Council's first heritage project and the Rest Park was reopened in 1974. William's gravestone was not found on personal inspection of the cemetery in 2005. The park is mostly grassed over and very few headstone remain.

Death. - On Sunday news spread through the district that Mr. Stephen Purnell had passed away at the advanced age of 88 years. The burial took place on Tuesday, and was very largely attended, and as the cortege wended its way to St Jude's Church the bell tolled out the number of years the deceased has attained. The Rev. J. Roberts held a very impressive service at the church, after which the mortal remains were followed to the C.E. cemetery where a great many had assembled to pay respect to the oldest pioneer of the district. Mr. Purnell was married to Miss Rosetta Moulds, daughter of the late Simon Moulds, sen., of Dural, at All Saints Church, Parramatta in the year 1853. The deceased leaves a widow and seven children of five daughters and two sons, 44 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Many beautiful wreaths were placed on the grave. The funeral arrangements were ably carried out by Mr. Metcalfe, Parramatta.

They are in Anglican 1, section 56, lots 73 and 75. It is right up near the Pacific Highway at Sandgate and virtually behind the Admin Building. Unfortunately there are no headstones so no inscriptions. All that one can go on is the lot numbers - Sarah Ann Purnell Lot 73 (on Left) and Simon Peter Purnell Lot 75 on the right. The two headstones on the photo that you can see are the graves on the other side of the row.
