Sarah was a general servant and spinster, aged 18 born in Sydney and living at Pennant Hills near Parramatta. The consent of Charles H. Hickey a guardian of __ was given to the marriage. Simon's parents were recorded as Stephen Purnell a farmer and Rosetta Moles [sic]. The only parent that was recorded for Sarah was her father George Griffiths. Rosetta Purnell nee Moulds and Harriet Telfer stood as witnesses. Rosetta Purnell made her X mark. St David's Church has since been demolished.

ASSAULT CHARGE.
Ernest Frederick Hinch of Belmont, charged S. Purnell, also of Belmont, with having assaulted him at Belmont, on March 29. Hinch stated that a boy named Plain asked him to allow him to put a horse in the paddock attached to a house, of which Hinch was the caretaker. He gave him permission, but Purnell refused to allow the boy to put the horse in the paddock. The defendant's shop is opposite the paddock. Hinch walked along, and the defendant said to him "Come here. I have been waiting for you for a long time". Purnell then rushed at him with a boat scull. Hinch was watching the scull, and the defendant hit him a heavy blow under the jaw with his fist. He had pain for three or four days.
Purnell was fined 30/-, with costs of Cour 10/-, and professional costs 1 pound one shilling in default 14 days' hard labour.

OBITUARY
MR. S.P. PURNELL.
Mr. Simon Peter Purnell died at his home in Edgar-street, Belmont, aged 86.
He was born on the South Coast. Most of his early life was spent at Dural, where he worked on the railways.
He came to the Newcastle district in 1914 and lived at Mayfield for 14 years. He lived at Belmont for 25 years, where he was a carrier till he retired.
He was a member of the Belmont Bowling Club.
The funeral was to the Church of England portion of the Sandgate cemetery.
Mr. Purnell is survived by his wife, five sons - George (Taree), Alfred (Pelican), Herbert, Frank and Leonard (Belmont), and five daughters, Mesdames A. Tucker (Casula), G. Price (Mayfield), E. Laverty (Sydney), P. Luke (Potts Point), and M. Coutman (Tamworth). There are 19 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

They are in Anglican 1, section 56, lots 73 and 75. It is right up near the Pacific Highway at Sandgate and virtually behind the Admin Building. Unfortunately there are no headstones so no inscriptions. All that one can go on is the lot numbers - Sarah Ann Purnell Lot 73 (on Left) and Simon Peter Purnell Lot 75 on the right. The two headstones on the photo that you can see are the graves on the other side of the row.
