Text: MODEST HERO. RESCUES SMALL CHILD. FROM DANGEROUS SURF. NEWCASTLE, Sunday. The Sydney Morning Herald... Monday 4 March 1929, page 12. News 202 words Diving fully clothed into boiling surf at the eastern end of Newcastle Beach this evening, a young man rescued Herbert Purnell, aged 3 years, of Hanbury-street, Mayfield, from what had appeared to be the certainty of of drowning. Once he had given the child back inbto his mother's arms. the rescuer moved quickly from the excited crowd that had gathered. His name cannot be ascertained. The child had been playing on the rocks near the ocean baths, apparently well away from the water. A huge wave that broke on the coast about 6.30 p.m. however, surrounded him, and he was swept off his feet and carried out to sea. Witnesses of the occurence stated that the man dived headlong in as soon as he saw the child's danger, and took the risk of being thrown against the many rocks in the neighbourhood. When he had the child safely in tow he had a hard struggle against the heavy surf, but being a strong swimmer, was able to struggle ashore. It was one of the bravest feats ever seen in the district. The child suffered severe shock and a few scratches. |
