Article from Daily Mirror, Parramatta and Western, Monday February 8, 1960, page 3: Jack still on deck! 41 years as barber.

When Charley Leabeater took on a slightly built, 14-years-old youth as apprentice in his Church St. barber shop just after the turn of the century, he never dreamed that the boy would one day be his boss.

But that's exactly what happened because 12 years later Charley went to work for the apprentice at his shop in Station St., Wentworthville.

The apprentice, as everyone well knows in Wentworthville, is Jack Griffiths (63), who last week entered his 42nd year of business at the Station St. premises.

This achievement makes Jack Griffiths the oldest established businessman in Wentworthville.

Mr Griffiths, after being apprenticed, worked with Charley Leabeater in Church St. for more than 12 years.

Bought shop

When he bought his own shop at Wentworthville, Mr Griffiths asked his boss if he would work for him.

The reason was that Charley was considered the 'best' when it came to hairdressing.

Charley stayed with his former apprentice for more than 10 years until the Wentworthville business was well and truly on its feet.

Jack Griffiths only serves behind the counter now.

'A full-time job too.' he said today. He retired from active hairdressing about 10 years ago, and has since been content to stay behind the counter.

Won't retire

An active 63, he says he has no intention of ever retiring.

'I tried retiring about ten years ago when I took sick, but it didn't work,' he said.

'I've been around too long now and have made too many friends to give them all away.

'I guess I love life too much.'

Death January 2, 1965 (aged 68 years)
Address: Wentworthville Community Hospital
Cause of death: Carcinoma of left lung, 6 months, Cachexia, secondary carcinomatosis, 3 months
Note: Jack was described as a tobacconist aged 68 of 39 Moree Avenue Westmead. The informant was Jack's widow, E. J. Griffiths of 39 Moree Avenue Westmead. The death was registered on 11 January 1965.
