On 14th March 1836, at the age of 20, he was convicted of burglary at the Kent Assizes, and sentenced to death, which was quickly modified to Life transportation. He arrived in Australia in 1837 on the “John 4” [sic], and seems to have been on his best behaviour, as he was granted a Ticket of Leave (No. 45/498) later in 1837. He received a conditional pardon on 4 Nov 1851.
