Text:

"MRS SUSANNAH SHERWOOD, widow of Frank Sherwood, and one of the oldest natives of the colony, passed away peacefully to her rest at the residence of her son, Mr James Sherwood, well known fruitgrower of Seven Hills, on Monday last after an illness of but five days. Born at Toongabbie in 1806, the deceased could well claim to be one of those who saw the dawning of the history of this colony. Her father, Mr Simon Moulds, was one of the pioneers who settled at Toongabbie, and there at the age 18 years the deceased met and married at St. John's Parramatta, Frank Sherwood. The old lady retained her senses up to the last, and when Dr. Phillips was called in and at once said that the end was at hand, she was acquainted with the fact and was quite resigned to the inevitable. Mrs Sherwood had eleven children, nine of whom are living, and she leaves behind her 104 grandchildren and 130 great-grandchildren. The funeral, all the arrangements of which were conducted by Mr Metcalfe, took place on Tuesday and the body of the venerable lady was interred in the Rouse Hill cemetery in the presence of a numerous concourse of friends and relatives. The Rev. Dixon-Hudson read the funeral service at the grave."

William Robt Sherwood, labourer, living at Blacktown, deposed that the deceased, S. Sherwood, was his father. He lived at Blacktown. Witness and his wife went to see him at about 11 on 24th September. He said that he had a pain in his stomach. They took him to the witness's place. Put him to bed. He seemed to get better then. Witness's wife put hot fomentations to him. He had a drop of tea a little after 12. He died, however, about 1.15 pm. He suffered from a rupture which he had had for years. He was in a hospital four or five years ago. His age was 77 years. He had been a labourer. He was an old age pensioner. Apart from the injury already mentioned, he seemed generally a fairly healthy man. He had no property. His life was insured with the Mutual Life Office for 9 pounds. Margaret Sherwood's granddaughter, Doris Lamont (Bennett), remembers that her grandmother used to walk to the Sydney Woollen Mills, Parramatta North, and back carrying a 25 pound bag of flour. There were no milk deliveries. Either a house cow was kept, or milk was purchased or traded from an obliging neighbour.
