"MRS SUSANNAH SHERWOOD, widow of Frank Sherwood, and one of the oldest natives of the colony, passed away peacefully to her rest at the residence of her son, Mr James Sherwood, well known fruitgrower of Seven Hills, on Monday last after an illness of but five days. Born at Toongabbie in 1806, the deceased could well claim to be one of those who saw the dawning of the history of this colony. Her father, Mr Simon Moulds, was one of the pioneers who settled at Toongabbie, and there at the age 18 years the deceased met and married at St. John's Parramatta, Frank Sherwood. The old lady retained her senses up to the last, and when Dr. Phillips was called in and at once said that the end was at hand, she was acquainted with the fact and was quite resigned to the inevitable. Mrs Sherwood had eleven children, nine of whom are living, and she leaves behind her 104 grandchildren and 130 great-grandchildren. The funeral, all the arrangements of which were conducted by Mr Metcalfe, took place on Tuesday and the body of the venerable lady was interred in the Rouse Hill cemetery in the presence of a numerous concourse of friends and relatives. The Rev. Dixon-Hudson read the funeral service at the grave."

Address: District Hospital
Note:

Death Notice for Joseph Sherwood published Tuesday, 8 Dec 1942 in Sydney Morning Herald -- SHERWOOD December 7, 1942 at District Hospital, after a long illness, Joseph, beloved husband of Laura Sherwood, of Rouse Hill, aged 72 years.

Sale of Land: 1946/47 by Laura W. (Widow) (Executrix) Parish of Castle Hill, at Rouse Hill, 2 acres 3 roods 32 perches, Lots 32 to 38 and 64 to 66 of Gamback's subdivision (Aberdour Village) N.E. by Adelphi Street.

Taken from "Rouse Hill House and the Rouse" by Caroline Rouse Thornton (1988) published by Caroline Thornton, 18 Doonan Road, Nedlands W.A. - p3 ..."When my father Gerald Terry, took over the management of the property in 1930, no one had ever before tried to make a living out of it......Much of the 1300 acres was still bush, which I remember clearly, and my father combined progressive clearing of this with a busy trade in firewood. He cleared both the dam paddock and the swamp paddock. He also grew crops on the cleared paddocks and built up a dairy herd. From seven or eight cows he built this up to 30, and at times 60 sheep. He was helped by such men as Joe Sherwood, Leslie Dodd and Len Heather......I can remember going up to the bails to watch Joe and the others at work. p179...After 1893 the number of people at Rouse Hill was reduced. Horsely was still a familiar figure around the garden and outhouses, and Kate still reigned in the kitchen. Lizzie Sherwood was the maid. This Lizzie came from one of the districts oldest families. Numerous Sherwood's are to be found buried in the old cemetery at Rouse Hill...."

From the Author's father Gerald Terry..."Joe Sherwood cut wood and was a good cutter. He was of medium height and worked for about 20 years. Arthur Sherwood was more slightly built....... Wages were probably one pound per week plus keep".
