Text:

SHOCKING CATASTROPHE - TWO MEN AND THIRTEEN HORSES KILLED BY LIGHTNING. - Mr George Coward, of the gold escort, has favoured us with the following particulars of a sad occurrence which took place on Wednesday, near the Weatherboard Inn, on Western Road. A thunderstorm which had been brewing for about half an hour burst over this neighbourhood with extreme and fatal violence at one o'clock, the lightning striking Mr. Black's and Mr. Forester's four drays and horses (which were encamped some thirty or forty yards in front of the public house), and sad to say, killing instantaneously Mr. Black, a young man named Ferguson, lately in the employ of Mr. R. Martin of Bowenfels, and thirteen horses, seven of which were the property of the deceased Black, four the property of Mr. R. Martin, and two belonging to a Mr. Charles Fell, of Hartley. Mr Fell was himself struck by the electric fluid, as was also a young man named James Carrington in company with Mr. Black; but, fortunately, both these persons escaped without any material injury. ... Mr. Black's younger brother and several other persons were standing in close proximity to the encampment when the dreadful occurrence happened, but providentially the whole of them escaped the awful fate of their two fellow travellers. Six or eight horses were also unharmed, notwithstanding that they were close besides those which were destroyed. The bodies of the two deceased men remain at the Weatherboard, awaiting the coroner's inquest. They are slightly discoloured where struck by the electric fluid, and it is remarked, as a perculiar circumstance, that the carcases of the horses became in half an hour as much swollen as they would become in the course of several days, supposing their deaths had resulted from any other cause.

Death of a fatherJohn Black
March 27, 1866 (aged 13 years)
Cause: head injuries as a result of being thown from a gig.
Shared note: In Mar 1856, John took James Pye, an orange grower and the mayor of Parramatta, on a visit to Penant Hills to discuss the cause of the orange blight disease. The return journey began at Bellamy's farm at about noon and they went down Ca stle Hill Road. They came upon some men working on the road near Suttor's farm. John's horse took fright, shied and his gig rolled over throwing him out on his head. Dr. Sutter was called but John had died on the spot near the Cross Road at Baulkham Hills from head injuries. (The Castle Hill Rd referred to is now called Old Northern Road, and the accident occurred near the present junction of Old Northern Road and Windsor Road). He was 60 years old and a 'highly respected citizen' of the district. An inquest was held at Schofield's Horse and Jockey Inn, Baulkham Hills.
