His attestation papers record that he was an unmarried carpenter of Kellyville via Parramatta, of Church of England religion, aged 25 years and 3 months, with a medium complexion and brown hair and eyes. His next of kin was put as his father Mr J Andrews, Kellyville PO, via Parramatta, New South Wales.

John's rank on enlistment was Private, 4th Battalion, 18th Reinforcement. At age 25, John and his unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A55 Kyarra on 3 June 1916. On 23 Sep 1916, he was transported to France. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 12 May 1917, and promoted to Corporal on 8 Jul 1917.

He was Court-Martialled on 8 Oct 1918. He was by then a Sergeant.

He returned to Australia 31 May 1919.

KELLYVILLE. DEATH OF MR. J. ANDREWS. Mr. John Andrews, of Kellyville, passed away on the 5th of April at tho age of 62 years. His funeral moved to tho Rouse Hill cemetery on Saturday, the Rev. A. W. Setchell conducting the burial service at the graveside. Mr. Andrews was a native of Yarmouth (England), and leaves seven children, whose ages, range from 21 to 31 years. Included in them is Mr. Henry Andrews. Two girl children died before their father. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Win, Met calfe and Co.
