Text:

Mr. John Moulds, a very old resident of the Par- ramatta district, died at his residence, Phillip-Street, on Monday morning. Mr. Moulds was born at Toongabbie (when that place was a penal settle- ment) 86 years ago. He had been married over 63 years, and his widow still survives him. Mr. Moulds, who carried on farming in Toongabbie until a few years back, had vivid recollections of the early days in that district, and, as a boy, had repeatedly seen a gang of 100 men marched into the settlement on a Satur- day morning, to be flogged for some offence. One man, he stated, he recollected, was flogged week after week (receiving as many as 100 lashes at one time) for not having dug the ground he was working at the required depth.

Death of an Old Colonist. Early on Monday morning a very old colonist named John Moulds died at his residence, Parramatta, at the advanced age of 86 years. He was born at the Toon- gabbie settlement and had vivid recollec- tions of the cruelty practised upon the con- victs in those early days. It was no un- common thing to see 100 men marched to the settlement on a Saturday morning to be flogged, the punishment ranging from 50 to 100 lashes. One man he saw flogged (100 lashes) Saturday morning after Satur- day morning, his offence being that he had failed to turn up the sod to the regulation depth. This man was lashed to such a degree that he was bent double with the torture. Mr. Mould leaves a widow and has been married 63 years last November. Messrs Simon and George Moulds, of Dural, Mrs. J. Brogden, of Parramatta were nephews and nieces of the deceased
