Text: According to tradition, James had been destined for the church like his father and grandfather before him. On reaching manhood he decided that he was not suited for that vocation, and entered upon some other line of work. In time he was in a position to marry, and it was after the death of his wife, leaving four young children (three daughters and a son) that he decided to try his fortune in Australia. Text: A 'Johnathan' Kennedy was granted 160 acres in the Prospect Hill district in May 1799, known as 'Nettlestead Farm'. Father and son are confused in colonial records. A list of free settlers in 1801 lists John Kennedy per 'Sovereign' as the holder of the 1799 grant; he is identified in the 1802 muster as 'Mr Kennedy' on the same grant. These records suggest that the father who had arrived per the 'Sovereign' in 1795 was the holder of the grant, although his son may have worked with him on the farm. Muster records and a memorial of 1825 confirm that the son had preceeded him on the 'Surprize' in 1794. |
