Text: Elizabeth, when aged 10, was tried and acquitted of a felony at Bristol. 2 years later she was convicted along with two men, John Clements and John Rossiter, of grand larceny. At age 12, she was sentenced to seven years transportation in Bristol on 5 Apr 1790. Elizabeth sailed aboard the ship 'Mary Ann', an old French 298 ton ship which was part of the Third Fleet, with 149 other women, departing 16 Feb 1791 and arriving in Sydney on 9 Jul 1791. Text: Elizabeth and William Kentwell lived between 1796 and 1809 at Toongabbie, where they farmed a land grant. William drowned in the flood of 1809 and on 23 August 1809 she took seven year old Charlotte to the Female Orphan Institution at Parramatta. She continued to run the farm with the help of Hannah and the two boys, and a little while later, in about 1813, entered into a relationship with an Irish convict named Murty or Murtagh Shields who had a wife and six children at home in Ireland. |

Text: The 1814 muster had Elizabeth with six children living with her. In 1815 D'arcy Wentworth paid Elizabeth a bull and two cows as part payment for some of William's land. Elizabeth was still living at Toongabbie in May 1820 when her son John Kentwell applied for a land grant. He said he was living with his widowed mother at Toongabbie. |
