John was 19 and 2 months when he enlisted. At the time of his enlistment he was described as a metallurgy assayer and was physically described as 5 foot 10 inches high, 10 stone in weight, 36 inch chest, fair complexion, grey eyes and fair hair. He was of Church of England religion. He departed Sydney on 29 Jul 1916 and arrived at Plymouth in the 'Orsova' where he disembarked on 14 Sep 1916. He fought in the Heavy Artillery Brigade in France. He was hospitalised a few times in England with deafness. He was eventually diagnosed with nervous deafness, and returned to Australia on HMAT 'Corinthic' on 7 Mar 1918. He was discharged on 9 May 1918.
