Address: St Saviours Text: William was described as a labourer of Gurrunda near Goulburn when married by Rev. William Sowerby at St. Saviours, Goulburn. Ellen was aged 19, a native of Cork Ireland. Consent of her mother Mary Lynch, a widow, alias Murphy was given. Both sets of parents names were later added to the statutory registration. The church records the parents as John Wood and Maria Kingsell [sic] and Thomas Lynch and Mary Murphy. Both bride and groom made their X mark, as did Ellen's mother, one of the witnesses. The other witness was Jane Medgit. |

Text: William's death cannot be found in the indexes to statutory deaths. His probate file records his death at Gundagai, 20 May 1871. This information was contained in an affidavit sworn on oath by his widow Ellen Wood. She was granted probate on 19 July in accordance with a will dated 15 May 1871, with William's 'signature' on it attested by two witnesses in Gundagai, one a solicitor. (Although on his marriage certificate and the 1869 birth registration to which he was the informant, he signed his name with an 'X'). |
