MR. J. P. SEDDON Last Saturday afternoon Campbell, town lost its oldest resident when Joseph Pickles Seddon peacefully passed away at the great age, of 92 years and 10 months. Not only was the late Mr. Seddon the oldest per. sonality of the district, but he also ranked as one held in the highest esteem — A man all in Campbelltown was proud to claim as a citizen. Death took place at a private hospi tal in Major Bay Road, Concord, fol lowing less than a week's illness. During the last few months those closely associated with the late Mr. Seddon must have noticed that the grand old man was failing in health but never a word did he say that such was the case. Less than a week prior to- his death he was walking about with that firmness of step many a young man has so often en- vied. The deceased was born iu Esling ton, London, on New Year's Day in 1845, and when he left England to come to Australia he was only 19 years of age, making the trip on a sailing ship which took 101 days. Little did young Joseph Seddon then think that he was going to reside in the country for nearly 73 years, because his trip to Australia was really a health trip. A London doctor had told him that if he did not get out of England he would soon die from consumption. He remained no time in Sydney, but made straight for the country, and at Burrowa In the Yass district he secured his first employment, not that of a chemist which he studied for in London, but as a 'new chum' farm hand. After settling down in Yass, his mother and step-father came out from Eng land to reside with him. Some years later he drove the mail coach in the Yass-Burrowa district. In the year 1872 on 3rd January, he married Miss Esther Crossley (a native of War geila, in the Yass district), and with his wife and young family went to Campbelltown in 1887, arriving there on his 50th birthday. At Campbell town he purchased the cordial manu facturing business from Mrs. Hurley, who at the great age of 96 years died at 'Hillcrest,' Campbelltown, less than a month ago. The late Mr. Seddon retired from business somewhere about 10 years ago. At the age of 28 years, the de ceased joined the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, and during his 64 years as an Oddfellow, he always took an active part in that Order and in Campbelltown has for many years past held office in Loyal Campbelltown. Lodge. He joined the Ancient Free and Accepted masons in Yass over 50 years ago, and at the time of his death was a member of Lodge Federation, No. 196 (Camp telltown). Although the deceased did not take an active part in civic af faire, during his 42 years' residency in Campbelltown, both he and Mrs. Sedden (now deceased three years) never lacked their responsibilty as citizens and were ever ready to assist all charitable functions and institu tions. In church life, the late Mr. Seddon set a wonderful example, and as a parishioner of St. Peter's Church of England, he endeavoured every Sunday to occupy his family pew. As previously mentioned his wife pre deceased him a little over three years ago, she passing away on the 11th Nov- ember, 1934, at the age of 8I years. Of the issue there were four sons (three deceased) and five daughters. Of the family now 'living are Mrs. Louisa Pages, of Concord; Mr. Jos eth J. Seddon, of Campbelltown; Mrs. Miriam Woods, of Thirroul; Mrs. Lydia McNab, of Lidcombe; Winifred (Mrs. J. J. Howell), of Nar andera; Miss Evelyn Seddon, of Campbelltown. There are also 18 granchiidren and 15 greatgrand children. — 'Campbelltown News.'
