Text: Committed for trial on 12th October 1796, the actual trial held at the Castle Winchester, did not occur until 30th January 1797. All Jurors signed guilty to his stealing 40lbs of lead despite his pleas of innocence. Joseph was transported with 9 other prisoners to a Hulk called “THE FORTUNE”. There were 592 other prisoners on board this prison Hulk. Joseph was there for two and a half years before being transferred to the ship 'Canada' for transportation. Text: In 1812 Joseph and his partner Elizabeth Tribles were living at Field of Mars with Elizabeth's daughter Ann from a previous relationship. Joseph was a tenant farmer. He had been provided with 15 acres of land on a clearing lease. The sum of 15 pound had to be paid to the Government annually. The property was located on the western side of Marsden Road, Mobbs Hill, within the Fields of Mars. |

Text: The 1822 Muster gives the description of Joseph’s farm having, 6 acres of wheat, 6 acres of corn, 2.5 acres of oats and half an acre of potatoes. Joseph had also planted a one acre orchard. On the 50 acres mentioned previously, Joseph had 1 horse that grazed there and also 16 hogs. |

Text: On 28th September 1831 Joseph wrote to the Colonial Secretary, Alexander Macleay giving his address as the Field of Mars. The letter requested to be granted the 15 acres of land he was living on. He had requested this before but had been refused. Joseph’s request of portion 79 was officially approved on 19th October 1831. |
