Joseph arrived on the Richmond River with the first party of sawyers in 1841 and eventually became a shipowner and proprietor of the 'Sawyer's Arms Hotel' opened in the early 1850s at Ballina.
His daughter Josephina, born 1851 gave her name to his schooner 'Josephine'. The schooner was eventually wrecked off the coast of South Ballina in 1864.
