Mrs. Mary Ann Mobbs, who died at Carlingford last week, was one of the oldest residents of Parramatta district. She was born in Parramatta 95 years ago, and lived there and at Carlingford almost all her life. She had 17 children and is survived by over 400 descendants. Mrs. Mobbs had a keen recollection of early Sydney and Parramatta. As a child she attended horse races on what is now Hyde Park. At that time there was a grandstand midway between St James Church and Old South Head Road. She also remembered a public hanging of two convicts at Parramatta, which was attended by nearly all the residents of the district; and she recollected having seen convicts making bricks near what is now Westmead. The funeral took place at Carlingford Anglican cemetery. Source: Dunn, Judith. Mrs. Mary Ann Mobbs, who died at Carlingford last week, was one of the oldest residents of Parramatta district. She was born in Parramatta 95 years ago, and lived there and at Carlingford almost all her life. She had 17 children and is survived by over 400 descendants. Mrs. Mobbs had a keen recollection of early Sydney and Parramatta. As a child she attended horse races on what is now Hyde Park. At that time there was a grandstand midway between St James Church and Old South Head Road. She also remembered a public hanging of two convicts at Parramatta, which was attended by nearly all the residents of the district; and she recollected having seen convicts making bricks near what is now Westmead. The funeral took place at Carlingford Anglican cemetery. Source: Dunn, Judith.
