Petition
1850 (aged 25 years)
Note: Francis and his father (Francis Sr) put their names to a petition of fruit growers which was sent to the New South Wales Parliament. The protest was against what was considered to be an unjust and excessive series of dues charged to any orchardist from outlying and areas who needed to sell their produce in the City Markets. By contrast, produce grown nearer the city incurred much lower rates.

Francis and his father (Francis Sr) put their names to a petition of fruit growers which was sent to the New South Wales Parliament. The protest was against what was considered to be an unjust and excessive series of dues charged to any orchardist from outlying and areas who needed to sell their produce in the City Markets. By contrast, produce grown nearer the city incurred much lower rates.
The petition was an early attempt at co-operation between the scattered fruit-growers to protect their interests, and it has in addition the great historic value of recording the signatures or names of early residents who, on other legal documents, usually only made their marks.

Property
1855 (aged 30 years)
Note: In 1855 when the 'Mr Wilberforce' property at Thompson's Corner, originally owned by Samuel Marsden, was divided into 3 lots and put up for auction, Francis bought a 28 acre block for £210. The other two buyers were James Smith, who built the stone house still standing at the Corner (1979) and Edward Maher, whose family for some generations later lived on orchards on the southern portion, near Copeland Road.
