Note: Henry's father John died without having made a will. Henry was granted administration. He received goods and effects to the value of £630, after paying a consideration to John's widow Mary. |
Will
|
Text: In his will, Henry portioned out to his children and two of his grandchildren a total of 286 acres in Pennant Hills, 950 pounds in cash and a small property in Parramatta. For many years of the 20th century, Henry's family lived on these lands as apportioned. Eli's 15 acres were around and opposite the church; Dan's land of 20 acres was adjacent, bordered Franklin Road and included the eastern Gumnut Road-New Line Road corner; Seth lived on the western corner of Gumnut Road and his 21 acres ran down to Purchase Road; his neighbour Lewis lived on a 21 acre strip between Gumnut and Purchase Roads, and their sister Ruth Banks had an adjacent 10 acres. Gumnut Road was named Pogson's Lane until the late 1920s. |
Religion
|
Note: Henry and his family lived opposite the Wesleyan Chapel, and in their yards and sheds, the horses and carts of the congregation were left during services. In 1873 Henry became a church trustee and in 1888 when a growing congregation necessitated the building of a second and larger church, he gave an adjoining portion of his land for this, plus an extension of the burial ground. Henry and sons Daniel, Lewis and Seth were trustees of the new church, and 'Mrs H. Pogson' was listed as one of the ladies responsible for the large tea-meeting held after the opening service. |
Occupation
|
Note: An early meeting of the Pennant Hills Progress Association was held in the home of 'Mr Pogson', orchardist, in 1897. |

Text: When Henry died in his will left his children and 2 of his grandchildren 286 acres of land in Pennant Hills, 950 pounds in cash and a small property in Parramatta. Noel has said that no one seems to know how he accumulated all of this. There is a church in West Pennant Hills which was built on land deeded to the Methodist Church by John Pogson. I have only been there once, but I do remember that the church yard was full of Pogson gravestones. Note: On Henry's death his West Pennant Hills land (plus a small property in Parramatta North) was divided between his 5 sons, 3 daughters and 2 grandchildren (Samuel and Emily Dunn). |
