David, an agricultural labourer from Sussex with wife Emma, a dairy maid from Kent and children William, David Jr. Edward, Robert and Emma all emigrated from Gravesend arrived in the colony aboard the ship 'Maitland', arriving 16 Nov 1838. On the voyage the eldest child, a girl aged 7, died of typhoid and was buried at sea.

They eventually settled...or, rather, 'squatted' on unsurveyed land at Pennant Hills. In 185- the survey was completed, and in 1858, twenty years after he had arrived in the colony, David Sonter became the legal owner of his land. It had an area of nearly 26 acres and was situated where West Epping Park is now, on the corner of Midson and Ray Roads, Epping.
