In 1953 he bought 40 acres of timber land at South Colah for £66. The next year he was a partner in the timber firm of Duffy and Mitchell at the Market Street Wharf in Sydney.
At the time of the death of his father in 1854, he was, in his father's death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald, described as 'P J Duffy of Duffy and Mitchell, Timber Dealers'.
