Benjamin was a cordwainer (maker of quality boots). He joined the Plymouth Division of Marines as a Private on April 9, 1781, and probably served as a marine shoemaker in the American War of Independence.
Benjamin arrived in Australia as a Private in the Royal Marines on the ship 'Friendship'. They arrived in Sydney Cove on the 21th January 1788. The Master of the ship was Francis Walton, and the Surgeon was Thomas Arndell. The ship left with 76 Males and 21 Females on board.The ship departed Portsmouth 13 May 1787.
The Royal Marines were sent out with the fleet to keep law and order.
