WINDSOR. [FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT]. FATAL ACCIDENT. - An inquest was held on Tuesday last, the 27th instant, at Sally's Bottoms, Kurrajong, before Mr. Laban White, coroner, and a jury, on the body of a man named John Norris. Stephen Norris, son of deceased, deposed: The deceased John Norris, a farmer, was my father and resided at Sally's Bottoms, Kurrajong; he was 64 years old, and a native of the colony; he and myself were employed yesterday morning in carting manure from the stable-yard on to the cultivated ground; we had loaded the cart for the fourth time about half past 11 o'clock, when deceased told me to go and take down the slip rails of the paddock where we intended depositing the manure, the distance being about one hundred and fifty years; there is a temporary unfixed slab bridge between the stable yard and the cultivated paddock; on passing over this bridge the slabs shifted and frightened the horse, which became unmanageable; the deceased was holding him by the head, and called out to me to come quickly; I came up to him at a quince tree which the horse had run against; my father still had hold of the reins, endeavouring to stay the horse, but eventually he let go and held up both his arms in front; I then observed that he had fallen and immediately afterwards saw the wheel of the cart pass over his body; the deceased told me (after the accident) to go and catch the horse, which I accordingly did; I then returned to where my father was lying, and spoke to him, but he made me no answer; I then turned him over on his back, and noticed that the skin was much broken from his chest to his chin. Having procured assistance the deceased was carried into the house. Dr. Selkirk was sent for, but my father died shortly after the accident. I think the manure in the cart would weigh about 8 cwt; the horse was of a very fiery disposition and required to be carefully dealt with. Rebecca Norris deposed: My father, the deceased, and my brother Stephen Norris were engaged yesterday morning in carting manure from the yard on to the cultivated ground; about 12 o'clock I noticed from where I was standing the horse bucking in the cart, and shortly after saw him run against a quince tree in the paddock; I did not see my father fall, but running down to the paddock, I found him lying on his side with his neck resting on a branch of the tree which had been broken off; saw blood upon his breast and chin; he was alive but breathing slightly; he died before he was removed to the house. John Selkirk, a duly qualified medical practitioner, deposed: I was summoned by Stephen Norris, about half past 11 o'clock on the forenoon of yesterday, to visit his father, John Norris, who, he said, had been severely injured by a horse running away and throwing him down, the cart to which the horse was attached passing over his body. I went with him at once, and on my arrival at the place found that Norris was dead; the body was very much bruised and wounded, especially over the chest and face; I have not made any post mortem examination of the body, but am of opinion that death has resulted from internal haemorrhage, caused by the rupture of some internal organ - the liver, or heart; several of the ribs were fractured. Verdict = That death of John Norris was accidentally caused by the wheel of a loaded cart passing over his body.
