Tyler was a Corporal. He was granted 60 acres on the right bank of York Reach in May 1797. The farm was augmented by an adjoining 110 acres issued in 1803, and in 1804 Tyler became a trustee of the new Nelson Common.
Although the 1806 muster credits him with wife and child, Catherine had left him for Tristram Moore, an apothecary at Sydney Hospital.
In Nov 1806, he advertised his flood free farm for sale, with good house, barns, garden and orchard, and began making arrangements to return to England.

"ALL persons are hereby cautioned against cutting timber, or in any manner trespassing with stock or otherwise on the Farm and Grounds of
THOMAS TYLER,
Situate on the south side of the River Hawkesbury, in the Nelson's District; bounded on the east by Simpson's, and on the other side by Fleming's farm.
It is hoped no person will hereby violate the tenor of this Notice, as no means will be withheld to bring every offender to justice."

A Desirable Farm of 150 Acres, 20 of which are in cultivation, all free from flood, excellently adapted to trade, and equally so to either stock or agriculture; with good dwelling house and barns, garden and orchard containing upwards of 100 fruit trees, and all other appurtenances, the property of Thomas Tyler, of whom particulars may be had on the premises at Hawkesbury."

Thomas Tyler was mentioned in a departure notification in the Sydney Gazette of 19 Apr 1807, also his wife Catherine Tyler, otherwise Johnson. Having clinched a deal for the farm with Governor Bligh, Thomas duly departed, but alone. Catherine was making her own way, independent of either husband or lover.
