Edgar was born and raised in Sydney but developed a longing for country life at an early age. When he was seventeen, his mother died and he set out for the country areas of New South Wales. He neglected to contact relatives for several months and it was feared that he had had an accident. However, a newspaper article revealed that he was prospecting at Knyeton Victoria.

At the end of hostilities he was granted leave by the army to study agriculture and irrigation in Scotland in 1919 and for 12 months in the United States.
