Text: David, an agricultural labourer from Sussex with wife Emma, a dairy maid from Kent and children William, David Jr. Edward, Robert and Emma all emigrated from Gravesend arrived in the colony aboard the ship 'Maitland', arriving 16 Nov 1838. On the voyage the eldest child, a girl aged 7, died of typhoid and was buried at sea. |

In the early days, Edward supplemented his farm and sawpit by fossicking on the beaches, the patches of black sand yielding fine specks of gold. |
