Note: Charles enlisted (he lied about his age) in the Australian army on 13 Dec 1915 with the rank of Private in the 19 Infantry Battalion - 1 to 13 Reinforcements (May 1915 - July 1916) . He embarked overseas on 13 Apr 1916 from Sydney and saw active service in France and was wounded in action there on 24 Dec 1916. He was hospitalised in January 1917 for 2 months for shell shock. He was found by the authorities to be underage and was then appointed as a bugler. In March 1918 he attended the Corps School at Havre, then transferred in Jun 1918 from the Australian Corps School Working Coy to the Australian Corps Working Coy. He returned to Australia from England on 7 Nov 1918 with 'effort syndrome' and was discharged on 6 Apr 1919 due to medical unfitness.
