A teacher at Hill End recognised his intelligence and convinced his father to let him go to school (instead of working at his father's brickworks). Charles wrote poems, one of which hangs in the Bathurst Town Hall I am told. When he was away working he would send letters home to his mother and sisters and they were written in the form of a poem.
