John arrived in the colony on 12 Aug 1838 aboard the ship 'Lady Kennaway' with his wife and young family of two boys, John and George. The ship departed Leith Roads 18 Apr 1838. They were assisted or bounty immigrants. Similar to an assisted immigrant, the Bounty Scheme operated to New South Wales from 1835 to 1841. A colonist chose the emigrant and paid his or her passage to Australia. The emigrant would then work for the colonist. The colonial Government would reimburse the colonist a bounty equal to the fare.
