Mary and William had a de facto relationship. Mary's only husband George Bowerman whom she married in 1814 was hanged in 1820, but subsequently found, on the evidence of one of his 'accomplices', to be innocent. William was assigned by the government to work Mary's property as compensation for the wrongful hanging of her husband George Bowerman. All the children born to Mary and William, kept Mary's married name of Bowerman.
