Citation details: Sydney Morning Herald Fri 22 Feb 1889 p. 9 Text: Mr. W.T. Pinhey, J.P., held a magisterial inquiry at the South Sydney Morgue yesterday relative to the death of a man named Robert Edmund Kell whose dead body was found in the scrub at Bondi on the previous day. The deceased was 63 years of age and had been twice married, leaving two families numbering 10 children. He had done no work for the past three years, and was possessed of independent means. Latterly he had exhibited an eccentric turn of mind. He left his house at Parramatta last Friday, stating he was going to visit an old friend in Sydney, but he did not do so. On Wednesday afternoon the body of deceased was found lying in the bush at Bondi, near the Bondi-road, about 200 yards fro the Cliff-house Hotel. Near to the body, a small box containing some powder resembling "Rough on Rats" was found. Dr. H. Sinclair deposed that he had made a post mortem examination; in his opinion death was due to aresnical poisoning and he believed that the powder contained in the box was "Rough on Rats". Mr. Pinhey found that the death was due to arsenical poisoning, owing to a dose of "Rough on Rats" which was self administered.
