In 1878 Asenath's father John purchased from James Wilkinson an adjoining piece of land to the north west, lying across New Line Road and the present David Road (Until the middle of the 20th century, David Road was known as Radley Road, and the old small bridge on New Line Road crossing Pye's Creek, as Radley's Bridge). This land he bequeathed to his two daughters Jane and Asenath to be effective upon the death of his wife. However, while Ethelia was still living, she passed the land on to these daughters. Asenath and her husband Alfred Ferguson sold their share of it to Jane and her husband Joseph Roughley.

Text:

In 1905, whilst timber cutting at Dural, John cut his foot severely and despite pleas of those people who went to his aid that he be taken to the nearest doctor, he insisted on being carried to the Sanitarium at Wahroonga. It was a long, slow and bloody journey in the back of a dray from Dural to the hospital, where he gradually became weaker and died from septicaemia and loss of blood.

The 'Union Conference Record' of May 15 1905 wrote his obituary: 'Died at Wahroonga, May 6, 1905, of blood poisoning, Brother John Radley of Pennant Hills, aged fifty four years. Early in his life he took up the occupation of orchardist, and his orchard property at Pennnant Hills ranked among the finest in the county of Cumberland; but drought and bad seasons combined to make his lot a hard one. Brother Radley lived a consistent life as a Wesleyan until eleven years ago, at which time he accepted present truth. Since that time he has been loyal and faithful to the cause, attending regularly the little church at Kellyville. He leaves a wife and nine children to mourn their loss.'

'Services were conducted at the house by Pastor G.B. Starr, fully 300 persons being present. About sixty carriages followed the hearse. Brother Radley was laid to rest in the Wesleyan Cemetery at Pennant Hills, the Wesleyan Minister, Pastor W.G. Taylor officiating at the grave. He died with a bright hope of being a sharer in eternal life in its fullness when the Life-giver shall return.'

John's stay in hospital was for 38 days; after his death his widow was given an account, receipted, for the hospital costs. The staff had collected the full amount of the account and Mary Ann, who then had six children under 18 years, consequently had to pay nothing. John's death was the first in the Wahroonga Hospital.
