SUICIDE AT TROY GULLY.
ON Saturday afternoon an inquest was
held at the house of Mr. James T. Ison,
Sunnyside, near Troy, before Mr. R. G.
Dulhunty, J.P., Coroner, and a jury of
twelve, on the body of an old man named
Martin Cridland, who had been found on
the previous evening hanging from the
rafters of his hut.
Jas. Thos. Ison, farmer, deposed that he
had known deceased for over a year ; last
saw him alive on the preceding day, when
he seemed in his usual health, but com-
plained of a pain in his back. He said " I
have only a very few hours in the world."
He asked witness when he would be knock-
ing off work, and witness replied " before
dark." Cridland then said " I would like
to see you before dark." Witness went to
Cridland's hut between 6.30 p.m. and
7 p.m., and, on opening the door, saw him
standing inside with a rope round his
neck. Did not go into the hut, but came
to Dubbo and informed the police. De-
ceased had rented the hut and 40 acres
of land from witness. Did not know why
he hanged himself.
Ronald M. Cridland, a nephew of de-
ceased, deposed that last Sunday fort-
night his uncle said to him (witness) as he
was about starting for Dubbo, " Good-by
my boy, I do not think I will be alive
when you come back." He then com-
plained of a pain in his back.
John Murray, produce dealer,Talbragar-
street, Dubbo, deposed that he last saw
Cridland alive on the preceding Wednes-
day. He was then in bed, and said he felt
very unwell. He (witness) had bought from
him between 26 and 30 acres of standing
crop for 30s an acre. Could only attribute
his suicide to the pain he suffered from.
He often told witness that he was tired of
the world, and would prefer to be dead.
Witness owed deceased £10 from last
season, which he could have had at any
time. Had told Cridland so, and also that
if he wanted more he would lend it to
him.
Francis Cridland, innkeeper, brother of
deceased, deposed that on Friday last,
from information received, he went to
Troy Gully and found his brother's body
hanging from a rafter in the hut. Could
assign no reason for his having committed
suicide.
Constable Denis Keogh deposed that
when he first saw the body the feet were
about 15 inches from the ground. A table
and a chair stood near, from one of which
deceased might have jumped. Found a
pass-book on the table, with a pencil
between the leaves. On opening it found
the following entry dated Nov. 26:—"I
have had enough of the world, and may
the Almighty God have mercy on my poor
soul, and may God have mercy on all my
fellow-creatures. So good-bye. I have
had enough of this wicked world. I have
prayed for you all, and hope you will pray
for me, a poor wicked sinner. I always did
believe there was a God." Also found
some letters, which on examination proved
to be private letters of deceased's sons. Had
known Cridland for some years as a quiet
hard-working man, but easily put out.
He complained of having been badly treated
by some of his brothers and nephews, but
said nothing against his brother Francis.
The jury, of which Mr. Jas. Coady was
foreman, returned a verdict of suicide by
hanging.
