'Court Story of How Wife Died A detective-sergeant told George Street North Court of Petty Sessions yesterday that a man described to him a fatal fight he had with his wife. Before the Court was Patrick James Purnell, 50, charged with murdering his wife, Araluen Hope Purnell, at their home in Albert Street, Forest Lodge on Sunday, February 14. Mr A.J. Reason, S.M., committed Purnell for trial at the Central Criminal Court on May 31 and refused him bail. Detective-Sgt. A.C. Green, of Camperdown police, said that he went to Purnell's house at about midnight on February 14 and saw the body of Mrs Purnell on the floor of the dining room. Purnell had told him that he had drunk a bottle of wine when his wife began abusing him. Sergeant Green said Purnell told him: "She was nagging me for drinkling, abusing me. "I gave her a belt under the ear with a wooden spoon and she hit me with a meat tenderiser. I was in a blind fury and dragged hold of her and we fell to the ground."
