DEATH BY FALLING DOWN STAIRS.
MR. Shiell (the City Coroner) held an inquiry yesterday
morning, at his office, Hyde Park, respecting the death of
a man, whose name is unknown, who died in the Infirmary
on Saturday afternoon from injuries received by a fall
down stairs at the Caledonian Hotel, King-street.
Edward Wicks, the landlord of the hotel,
said that he recognized the body of the de-
ceased as that of a man who called at the
bar on Saturday morning and asked for a glass of rum, but
which was not then served to him, as he immediately pro-
ceeded to go down stairs towards the kitchen and the yard ;
witness heard a noise soon after as if some one had fallen
down, and on going to the spot he found the man lying
senseless at the foot of the stairs bleeding from the left ear ;
Constable Havens, who arrived in the house, conveyed
the deceased to the Infirmary in a van ; the stairs where
the deceased fell are about nine from top to
the bottom, and are well lighted. Mrs. Wicks
said that she saw the deceased fall down stairs
to the kitchen floor ; she called out, and her husband and
Mr. Ryan came down from the bar and lifted the deceased
to the middle of the kitchen, when he appeared to be dying.
Dr. Marsden, resident medical officer at the Infirmary, said
that the deceased was insensible when placed under his care,
and remained in that state until the time of his death, which
took place about 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. A post-
mortem exarnination showed the brain to be highly con-
gested, and the temporal bone fractured ; the cause of death
was fracture of the skull. The deceased was apparently
sixty or sixty-five years of age. Verdict of accidental death.
