Paul emigrated as a convict aboard the ship 'Barwell'. He had been convicted at York Assizes for a term of 7 years on 9 Jul 1796. The Ship Barwell sailed from Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, and arrived in Sydney, NSW on 18 May 1798 under Master John Cameron. His crime was grand larceny - he forged a name on a bill of exchange in a merchant house in Hull where he worked as a clerk. Because of his literacy he worked as a schoolmaster and clerk as well as a carpenter.
