Citation details: The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser (NSW : 1803 - 1842) Sat 20 Nov 1813 Page 2 Text: On Wednesday Enoch Hutchinson, a boy 15 years of age, was indicted for maliciously shooting at Charles Connor, a boy about his own age, on the 1st of November instant, at Lane Cove, with intent to murder him, or do him bodily harm.— The act had been committed with a musket, charged with small shot, a number of which lodged in the back of the youth Connor, who gave evidence on the trial. It was proved, however, that the prisoner laboured under a degree of mental imbecillity, some- what approaching idiocy. His education and his morals had been unhappily neglected ; and of the miserable consequences of his neglect he had so early in life become a no less miserable example. In consideration of the extraordinary circumstances of the case the Court thought proper to sentence the prisoner to five years imprisonment in His Ma- jesty's gaol at Parramatta, six months thereof to be passed in solitary confinement;—-the whole residue to be appropriated to the benevolent work of useful instruction, by the aid of which his youthful mind may receive a proper bias, and a regard to moral habits adapt him to society, with whom it would be now unsafe for him to mingle. |
