Charles Whalan was sentenced to seven years transportation for poaching trout. He arrived in Sydney in 1791 aboard the Albemarle as part of the Third Fleet. His height was given as 5 feet 6 inches (167.6 cms) and his occupation as weaver. In 1793 he joined the New South Wales Corps and became Sergeant of the Governor’s Bodyguard of Light Horse, serving Governors Philip Gidley King and Lachlan Macquarie, until his retirement in 1822. He also became a trained surveyor.

"...The humble memorial of Charles Whelan
Most respectfully sheweth
That your memorialist is a sergeant in the 102nd regiment and has been in the service fifteen years five of which he has been [illegible] and has charge of the Cavalry and during that period he has conducted himself in an honest and soldier like manner.
That your memorialist has a wife and two small children which His Honor William Paterson Esquire then Lieutenant Governor was pleased to take into consideration and grant memorialist a farm comprising of sixty acres in case for his two children.
That your memorialist had also the indulgence if his house in Upper Pitts Row granted him by His Excellency Governor King which not quite [illegible] the whole of his ground in memorialist applyed [sic] to Colonel Foveaux who recommended him to Colonel Paterson and he obtained a new lease of the same for twenty one years.
That your memorialist also had an old brick house situate in south street given to him to live in for the purpose of being convenient to Government House at being in a [illegible] state memorialist made application to Colonel Paterson for a valuation thereon to be made which was granted and valued at ten pounds.
That your memorialist had also a lease of the dwelling dranted to him by Colonel Paterson at the recommendation of Colonel Foveaux, which dwelling memorialist has been at a great expense to [illegible] rebuilding the whole of the back part and making two additional rooms therein.
Your memorialist therefore most humbly prays Your Excellency will be pleased to take the whole of these circumstances into your consideration and grant memorialist a renewal of his grant and leases for which special indulgence he will as in duty bound every pray..."

That your petitioner had a house situate in South Street Sydney allowed him to live in by his late Excellency Governor Bligh for the purpose of being near to Government House and it being in a tumerous state petitioner made application to Lieutenant Governor Paterson thro. the hands of Colonel Foveaux for a valuation to be taken of the same, which was accordingly complied with and valued at ten pounds by Messrs. Lucas Legg & Allcock.
That your Excellency's petitioner having served upwards of seventeen years in the 102nd Regt. and being strongly recommended at different times to Colonel Paterson he was pleased to Grant petitioner a lease of the same for 14 years which has been delivered up according to Your Excellency's proclamation.
That your petitioner after receiving his said lease he rebuilt the whole of the walls, the front excepted, laid the whole of the floor new seald [sic] and fenced it in with the addition of 2 new rooms the whole of which expence [sic] amounted to nearly one hundred pounds - your petitioner therefore most humbly prays Your Excellency will be pleased to grant him a renewal of his said lease, and for which special indulgence he will as in duty bound every pray.

NOTICE. - All Persons are forbid trespassing on the Farm belonging to Serjeant Whalan, known by the Name of Macquarie Park, and bounded by the Old Prospect Road on the one side, and by Downey, Sanders, Lawson, Herbert, and Hyland's Farms; the undersigned having rented the above from the said Serjeant Whalan; - And further cautions All Persons from trespassing by Stock, cutting down Timber, or breaking down the Fence thereon, as any one offending after this Notice will be prosecuted. - Any Person desirous of sending Horned Cattle to graze, will have them taken care of at a moderate charge.
