Arch McKnight was the youngest son of a Scottish family which came to Australia in the early 1900s. His mother Jane and father, Archibald, settled in Cessnock on the Hunter Valley coalfields where Arch (senior) worked as a miner's deputy.
In 1932 in the midst of the Great Depression the family moved to Harbord on the northern beaches of Sydney. Arch was apprenticed as a printer but when war boke out in 1939 Arch joined the RAAF.
In 1940 he married Ruth Strachan of Ryde and in 1951 and 1954, David and Ian, respectively were born. Arch continued to work as a printer until his retirement in 1987 at which point he was working for NSW Government Printing Office.
Arch enjoyed his retirement until he suffered a stroke in 2002 and lived the last two years at Wesley Heights in Manly.
